We’re all entitled to an off day here and there. But do you know when you cannot afford to have an “off” day? On INTERVIEW DAY. Whether online or in person, you have got to bring your "A" game.
You should have a system in place to help streamline your interview prep process.
Here are 3 tips to get you grounded:
#1 Mold your mindset. If you go into your job interview or have a pre-interview call, with the mindset that:
The job market is over-saturated,
Your salary is going to be low,
The job’s going to suck, and
The workload is going to be hard…
Then your career is DOA. And we all know, despite what we see on those highly addictive medical TV drama series, ya can’t shock asystole.
Rather, get yourself in the right headspace, replacing those thoughts with:
The NP job market is competitive and I was selected for an interview. They like something about me and this is my time to shine.
Salaries are negotiable.
With new challenges come new learning opportunities.
That initial transition can be difficult, but it won’t last forever. I’ll seek out mentors and lean on/build my support system.
In addition, go in thinking that every interview leads to a possible job offer. Because that is the case.
On the day of, or night before your interview, do something for you:
Jam out to your favorite playlist, or
Journal or meditate, or
Get a good workout in, or
Enjoy your favorite beverage-- intentionally, no multitasking.
Whatever it is you decide to do, do it intentionally!
#2 Review your resume. Remember that professional summary you wrote and perfectly crafted to highlight your knowledge skills and abilities? It’s time to reflect on that and be prepared to shine. Also print out extra copies of your resume to distribute if needed.
#3. Curate confidence. During your interview aim to radiate confidence from the inside out 😎. To do this, adequate preparation is key.
You won’t know the answer to every question you’re asked! You can however, carefully craft your answers to the top interview questions such as:
Tell me about yourself,
Why do you want this job, and
Why should we hire you?
If you’ve heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: “You only get one chance to make a first impression.” Speak up and stand tall. Dress like you own the place!
Really though, you want to both feel good and look good. Opt for attire that’s professional and reflects your personality. Add a pop color in your shoes or for guys- your tie.
